How to Make Lava Lamp Lip Gloss – Easy DIY

In this blog post I want to share a special project with you—How to make Lava Lamp Lip Gloss!

This fun and unique DIY project is something I first created back in the 1990s for my daughters and craft shows.

It’s a blend of nostalgia and creativity that I think you’ll absolutely love. It was always a big hit.

Why Natural Colors Matter

In a world full of artificial products, I love keeping things natural.

That’s why I’ve chosen natural ingredients like butterfly pea flower powder and beet crystals for this lip gloss.

Not only do they give beautiful colors, but they’re also a healthier choice for your skin and the environment.

Please note, these colors are my choices.  You can use whatever water soluble, skin safe color you like.

Make Lava Lamp Lip Gloss: Step-by-Step Guide

Please watch the video to see the step by step process.

What You’ll Need:

  • Butterfly Pea Flower Powder: ¼ teaspoon
  • Red Beet Crystals or Powder: ¼ teaspoon
  • Vegetable Glycerin: 1 teaspoon per color
  • Coconut Vinegar: ¼ teaspoon (for color-changing magic!)
  • Castor Oil: 1 teaspoon per roll-on bottle
  • Vanilla Flavored Oil: Up to 6 drops (optional)
  • Roll-on Bottles: 10 ml size (I used 2)
  • Strainer: To ensure smooth application
  • Small funnels: or container with a spout for pouring.

Mixing the Colors:

  1. Start by measuring ¼ teaspoon of blue butterfly pea flower powder into a container. I’ll be doing something special with this powder—changing its color to a vibrant purple!
  2. In another container, measure ¼ teaspoon of red beet crystals or powder. This gives us a gorgeous red hue.

Adding Glycerin:

Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to each container. This will help create the base for our lip gloss.

The Color-Changing Magic:

  1. Here’s where it gets exciting! Add ¼ teaspoon of coconut vinegar to the butterfly pea flower powder. Watch as the blue transforms into a stunning purple—thanks to the acid in the vinegar.
  2. Stir both mixtures well to break up any lumps. If the beetroot powder clumps, let it sit in the glycerin for a while before stirring again.

Filling the Bottles:

  1. Pour the colored glycerin into your roll-on bottles. Use a strainer to catch any remaining lumps, ensuring a smooth finish.
  2. For the purple mixture, the vinegar makes it a bit more fluid, so take your time.

Creating the Oil Base:

  1. In a small container, add 1 teaspoon of Castor oil for each roll-on bottle. Mix in up to six drops of vanilla flavored oil (if you like). Remember, the flavor must be oil-based to blend properly.
  2. Pour this mixture into the bottles until they’re filled to the shoulder.

Final Touches:

Secure the roller tops onto the bottles. They can be a bit tight, so use a cloth or paper towel to cushion your hand as you push them on firmly.

And voilà! Your Lava Lamp Lip Gloss is ready. These glosses are not just beautiful—they’re also a healthy choice for your lips. They really do look like tiny lava lamps!

The Benefits of Coconut Nectar Vinegar

While we’re here, let’s talk a bit about coconut nectar vinegar, which plays a starring role in this recipe. It’s more than just a natural color-changing agent—it’s packed with nutrients like amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Plus, it’s rich in probiotics, has a low glycemic index, and has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Coconut vinegar is traditionally used in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, in Filipino cuisine it’s known as “sukang tuba.”

The Magic of Butterfly Pea Flower

One of the key ingredients in our Lava Lamp Lip Gloss is butterfly pea flower powder.

This vibrant blue powder isn’t just a natural colorant—it’s also packed with benefits for your skin and overall wellness.

Where It’s Grown:

Butterfly pea flower is native to Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The plant grows best in warm, tropical climates and is often found in gardens and wild areas. It’s not just a pretty blue flower, its used in traditional medicine and culinary dishes.

Benefits for Skincare:

Butterfly pea flower is a powerhouse when it comes to natural skincare. Here’s why it’s so special:

  • Rich in Antioxidants: Butterfly pea flower is loaded with antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which help protect the skin from free radicals and environmental stressors. This means it can help reduce the signs of aging and keep your skin looking youthful and radiant.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The anti-inflammatory properties of butterfly pea flower make it great for soothing irritated or inflamed skin. Whether you have sensitive skin or are dealing with redness, this ingredient can help calm and balance your complexion.
  • Hydration Boost: Butterfly pea flower also has moisturizing qualities, which help to keep your skin hydrated and soft. When used in lip gloss, it not only provides beautiful color but also helps to keep your lips nourished and smooth.
  • Natural Astringent: It works as a natural astringent, tightening and toning the skin, which can be particularly beneficial in lip care by keeping the delicate skin of your lips firm and healthy.

One of the most fun aspects of butterfly pea flower powder is its ability to change color.

When mixed with an acidic ingredient like coconut vinegar, the deep blue hue transforms into a rich purple.

This not only adds a unique visual element to your lip gloss but also demonstrates the fascinating chemistry behind natural ingredients.

The Best Oil for Your Lava Lamp Lip Gloss: Castor Oil

castor oil is the best oil to use when you make lava lamp lip gloss

In my journey to perfect this Lava Lamp Lip Gloss formula, I’ve experimented with many different oils.

After testing various options, I’ve found that castor oil is the best choice to make lava lamp lip gloss. Here’s why:

Castor oil has unique properties that make it ideal for lip gloss:

  1. High Viscosity: Castor oil has a thick, rich consistency that gives the lip gloss a luxurious feel. It provides a glossy finish that lasts longer than many other oils, making it perfect for a product like Lava Lamp Lip Gloss.
  2. Nourishing and Soothing: Rich in ricin oleic acid, a fatty acid known for its anti-inflammatory properties, castor oil helps soothe and protect your lips. It’s also packed with vitamins and fatty acids that nourish the skin, making it a fantastic choice for lip care.
  3. Moisturizing Power: Castor oil is deeply hydrating. It helps to lock in moisture, keeping your lips soft and supple. This is particularly important for a lip gloss that not only adds color but also provides care for your lips.
  4. Natural Shine: The natural shine of castor oil enhances the “lava lamp” effect, giving the gloss that beautiful, fluid look as it moves within the bottle.

By choosing castor oil for this lip gloss, you’re ensuring that your lips get the best care while also achieving the desired aesthetic effect. Whether you’re making this gloss for yourself or as a gift, castor oil guarantees a high-quality result.

Why Lava Lamp Lip Gloss Works: The Science Behind the Separation

The magic of Lava Lamp Lip Gloss lies in the combination of water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients, which naturally separate to create that mesmerizing “lava lamp” effect.

Here’s how it works:

Glycerin: The Water Component Glycerin, a key ingredient in this formula, is water-soluble. It’s responsible for the water-based portion of the lip gloss, carrying the natural colors from the butterfly pea flower and beetroot powder. Glycerin is also a humectant, meaning it draws moisture to your lips, keeping them hydrated and soft.

Castor Oil: The Oil Component On the other hand, castor oil is oil-soluble, and it forms the other layer in the gloss. Because water and oil don’t mix, the glycerin-based color stays separate from the castor oil, creating the beautiful, swirling effect that mimics a lava lamp. This separation is not just visually appealing but also ensures that both components can deliver their unique benefits to your lips.

When you combine these ingredients in a roll-on bottle, the result is a visually stunning, dual-layered lip gloss. The colors shift and swirl within the bottle, creating a dynamic and eye-catching effect that’s as fun to watch as it is to apply. Plus, each layer plays its part in nourishing and beautifying your lips, making this not just a pretty product, but a functional one too.

By understanding the roles of water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients, you can appreciate the thought and care that goes into creating a unique product like when you make Lava Lamp Lip Gloss. It’s a perfect example of how science and creativity can come together to make something truly special.
