When it comes to soap making, there is a niche market for everyone and room for everyone who makes soap.
Soap Making is a very general term. There are so many routes to take in the craft, so the niche market choices are endless.
Let’s look at the different types of modern soap. There is cold process, hot process, French milled, cream soap making, liquid soap making and melt and pour.
From here the options are endless too. Here are just a few soap making options you could look at when you are deciding on your target market.
You can focus on any one of these styles, or choose a few similar ones.
-Natural Soap – no scent, no color, may include herbs.
-Vegan Soap – no animal products, silk, honey, beeswax and, animal milk.
-Milk Soap – goat, cow, coconut milk, and soy milk.
-Fun Soap – anything goes, crazy colors, fun fragrance oils.
-Organic Soap – All or mainly organic ingredients.
-Tallow Soap – domestic and unusual animal fats, such as deer and ostrich fat.
-Honey Soap – all kinds of honey is used.
-Environmentally Friendly Soap – not using any oils or ingredients that may be controversial or harmful to the environment or the people and animals in the area. Such as Palm Oil.
The list is long and can be a lot more specific than what I have mentioned.
The most important decision you need to make when you are choosing your soap making niche is to be sure you stand behind your choice. Be true to yourself because it will show if you are not.
For example, if you are in love with the scent of strawberries and cream in your soap and are usually attracted to bath products that are crazy colored and smell fun, you will not be happy with a niche that focuses on minimal scent and minimal color.
Same with earth loving, organic ingredient soap makers. You would not enjoy the melt and pour world.
There is certainly a soap making niche for everyone who wants to make soap. I haven’t even mentioned all of the products that go along with soap making. Spa Salts, Bath Oils, Lotions and creams, scrubs, candles, it’s endless.
It is no wonder soap makers are so passionate about their craft. Look at the options and the potential to say exactly what you want to say through your products.
You can’t be enthusiastic and passionate about what you do if you don’t believe in it. Soap making has been a big part of my life since 1997. It has changed and grown with me.
When it comes to teaching soap making, it’s the new soap makers that keep me excited.
Their very first batch of cold process, then hot process and then liquid soap.
Every time I hear from a new soap maker, it reminds me how such a small thing like soap can bring a lot of joy, open doors and allow us to follow our passion and dreams. Who knows where it will lead?
